Making a Sci-Fi Chair in Blender

This weekend I was working on the interior of my ship and ended up with a chair design I’m super happy with. Below you’ll find my devlog + some notes from it’s script.

I took heavy inspiration from one of my favorite designs, the Eames chair. This costs quite a few buckaroos so while I can’t have one irl quite yet, I can make a little something for space-faring me.

Here you can see I had a a chair blocked out very roughly, this served as a scale reference while I built out the rest of the scene. To start, I separated the blocks into their own objects, then selected some planes, duplicated them, and split them out again. Then, I used the solidify and bevel modifiers to add some depth and stylize the edges a bit.

I then repeated this for the rest of the design. I’m sure that this isn’t the most perfect process for making an asset for animation or games but it’s one that works for me. I really love using the modifiers because I’m really only working with planes here. I don’t have to worry about having perfect topology. I’m really just worried about how it’ll end up looking to the camera.

Here you can see me adjusting how the arms connect to the chair. Definitely referencing how the Eames actually functions. This was a very interesting learning process because I actually never looked that closely at the eames mechanisms before. I never realized they had this plate on the side that holds up the back. Gives me a lot more appreciate for the engineering there.

Now I’m messing with how the chair will be held up. One reference for the cockpit so far is the ship from Fallen Order. The whole ship is just a masterpiece and I love how the chair and flight controls are floating above the glass. I may not go for that in the final cockpit but I may use something like the chair mount. I’ve also been tempted to just have it on some type of repulsion system but idk, I want the world I build to be somewhat grounded. (sorry for the pun, I couldn’t avoid it)

Lex, out.
